How does the F1 points system work in 2026?

In the 2026 Formula 1 season, points are awarded to the top 10 classified drivers of each Grand Prix using the scale 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. On Sprint weekends, the top 8 earn additional points. The fastest lap bonus point was removed from the 2025 season onwards.

Main race points

No points are awarded from 11th downwards. A driver who doesn't finish may still score if they complete at least 90% of the distance and are classified.

Sprint race points

Sprint weekends (between 5 and 6 per season) include a short Saturday race:

Championships at stake

1. Drivers' Championship: sum of individual points.
2. Constructors' Championship: sum of both drivers' points per team.

The Constructors' Championship determines part of the FIA's prize money distribution and pit-lane order for the following season.

Rain-shortened or interrupted races

If a race is suspended before 75% of the scheduled distance, points are awarded on a scaled basis:

• Less than 25%: no points.
• 25% to 50%: reduced scale.
• 50% to 75%: intermediate scale.
• More than 75%: full points.

This system came after the controversial 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, where points were awarded despite minimal racing.

How many points does the pole position earn? Zero in the race. Pole position doesn't award points directly, only the best grid slot.

What happens in a tie on points? The tie is broken by number of wins; if still tied, second places, third places, and so on.

Can a driver score without finishing? Yes, if they completed 90% of the distance and are classified in the top 10.
