What is graining in Formula 1?
Graining is a type of irregular tyre wear in Formula 1 in which small fragments of rubber detach from the tread and stick back onto the surface forming "grains". These grains reduce effective asphalt contact, causing a temporary loss of grip and race pace.
Why graining happens
Graining appears when the tyre is not at its optimum working temperature and is subjected to high lateral load. The cold or semi-cold rubber deforms without bouncing back: parts of the surface slide, tear off, and stick in small pieces.
Typical conditions that cause graining:
- Low track temperature (below 25°C).
- Compounds too soft for the asphalt.
- Smooth asphalt with little abrasion.
- Early stint before reaching tyre working window.
- Car setup with excessive lateral load.

| Aspect | Graining | Blistering |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Cold tyre + sliding | Overheated tyre |
| Appearance | Visible grains on surface | Blisters and tear-offs |
| Solution | Raise temperature, adjust driving | Lower temperature, soften setup |
| Reversible | Yes, can clear on track | No, permanent damage |
A key property of graining is that it can reverse: if the driver can raise tyre temperature and clean the tread, the grains detach and grip returns.
How drivers manage graining
- Smooth driving: less lateral load until the tyre warms up.
- Engine map adjustments to soften torque delivery.
- Pit wall communication about grip sensations.
- Strategic stops to switch compounds if graining is severe. A rival suffering graining is a prime target for an undercut.
Frequently asked questions
On which circuits is graining most common? Tracks with smooth asphalt and low temperatures: Silverstone in spring, Imola, Zandvoort.
Does graining affect all compounds equally? No. Softer compounds are usually more prone, especially on the first lap.
Can Pirelli eliminate it with new compounds? Pirelli has reduced the incidence with construction upgrades, but graining still appears in specific conditions.
Is graining only an F1 issue? No, it also occurs in other categories, but F1's high aerodynamic load makes it more noticeable.
