What is the undercut in Formula 1?
The undercut is a race strategy in Formula 1 in which a driver pits earlier than the rival they are trying to overtake. With fresh tyres, the attacker sets significantly faster lap times while the rival is still on worn rubber. By the time the rival pits, the attacker has gained enough time to come out ahead on track.
How the undercut works step by step
- Driver A runs second, behind Driver B, and cannot overtake on track.
- A's team calls them in one or two laps before B.
- A comes out on fresh tyres and posts much faster lap times.
- When B pits the following lap, they rejoin behind A.
The pace advantage from new tyres (typically 1 to 2 seconds per lap) is usually greater than the time the other driver gains by staying out. That is the key to the strategy.

| Condition | Favours undercut? |
|---|---|
| Rival on degraded tyres | Yes |
| Fast team pit stop | Yes |
| Heavy traffic on pit exit | No |
| Imminent Safety Car | No |
| Low-degradation circuit | No |
The undercut is most effective on circuits with high tyre wear (Hungary, Zandvoort, Singapore) and least useful on tracks where compounds hold up. If the rival is suffering graining, the undercut window widens.
Overcut: the opposite strategy
The overcut is the reverse: staying out longer than the rival while they pit. If the attacker's tyres still have pace and clean air helps, they can post fast laps and emerge ahead when they finally stop.
Frequently asked questions
How many laps earlier should you pit for an undercut? Usually 1 or 2 laps. Any longer and it becomes a different strategy play.
Can an undercut be countered? Yes. The rival team can pit the same lap ("cover") to neutralise the advantage.
Which tyres favour the undercut? Soft compounds on their first timed lap, when they deliver peak performance.
Which drivers are famous for using it? Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have executed memorable undercuts thanks to their consistent out-lap pace.
