What is the formation lap in Formula 1?
The formation lap is the warm-up lap every car runs before the race start, leaving from its grid slot and coming back to it. Its main job is to heat tyres and brakes so the cars have maximum grip when the lights go out.
How it unfolds
- Cars leave the grid when the green signal is given.
- They run at a moderate pace, without overtaking each other.
- They weave to heat tyres and accelerate-brake to bring brakes up to temperature.
- They return to their grid slot and wait for the red start lights.

F1 tyres only work properly above ~90 °C. A driver arriving at the grid on cold rubber will lose grip at the start and likely be passed by several cars.
