What is the formation lap in Formula 1?

The formation lap is the warm-up lap every car runs before the race start, leaving from its grid slot and coming back to it. Its main job is to heat tyres and brakes so the cars have maximum grip when the lights go out.

How it unfolds

  1. Cars leave the grid when the green signal is given.
  2. They run at a moderate pace, without overtaking each other.
  3. They weave to heat tyres and accelerate-brake to bring brakes up to temperature.
  4. They return to their grid slot and wait for the red start lights.

Why it matters

F1 tyres only work properly above ~90 °C. A driver arriving at the grid on cold rubber will lose grip at the start and likely be passed by several cars.

Common mistakes during the formation lap

  • Stopping past your grid box: penalty for displaced start.
  • Overtaking another car: an offence unless authorised by race control.
  • Arriving late at the grid: sporting penalty (10 seconds or more).
  • Stalling on the grid: must start from the pit lane at the back.

Formation lap in wet conditions

In heavy rain, the start can be behind the Safety Car: cars circulate behind the SC for several laps before being released. In extreme conditions there's an extra formation lap and the race is shortened by one lap.

FAQ

Does the formation lap count as a race lap? No. The race officially starts when the red lights go out.

Can drivers practise the start during this lap? Yes, drivers often do a simulated start on a straight to calibrate the clutch.

Who leads it? The pole position driver.

What if the pole man stalls? He raises his arm and the others avoid him; he must start from the pit lane.
