The 2026 World Cup format
The 2026 World Cup is the biggest in history: it grows from 32 to 48 teams and, for the first time, is hosted by three countries (the United States, Mexico and Canada). With so many teams, the format changes completely. Here is the simple explanation.
The group stage
- 48 teams split into 12 groups of 4.
- Each team plays 3 matches within its group.
- The top 2 from each group (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-placed teams advance → 32 qualifiers.

From there it is all single-elimination, starting with a brand-new round:
| Round | Teams |
|---|---|
| Round of 32 | 32 |
| Round of 16 | 16 |
| Quarter-finals | 8 |
| Semi-finals | 4 |
| Final | 2 |
The champion will play 8 matches in total (one more than under the old 32-team format).
The numbers behind the new format
- 104 matches in total (up from 64).
- The tournament kicks off on 11 June 2026 at the Estadio Azteca (Mexico City).
- The final will be played on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium, near New York.
Why did the format change?
FIFA expanded the tournament to make room for more teams from every continent. This gives more chances to countries that used to miss out and, together with the best third-placed rule, makes every point in the group stage decisive.
